Swear an affidavit — change of name, loss of document, declaration of age and similar.

Tip: An affidavit records what YOU declare. It does not by itself prove the fact, so an institution may still ask for the underlying document.

File a process or pay court fees.

Tip: Filing fees depend on the process and the court. Naming both up front avoids the file being assessed twice.

Ask about the status of a matter before the court.

Tip: Have the suit number. Without it a matter cannot reliably be identified, and enquiries about someone else's case are not answered.

Obtain a certified copy of a court record or document.

Tip: A certified copy carries the court's seal and is what other institutions accept. A photocopy of a judgment does not serve the same purpose.

Ask for legal assistance if you cannot afford representation.

Tip: Apply as early in the matter as you can. Aid assigned before a hearing date is far more useful than aid assigned after one has passed.
